Dedicated Mom Clinging To Life After Horrific Crash Outside Work, Mahwah Councilwoman Says

UPDATE (Feb. 2): A Mahwah mom who worked for the Federal Reserve in East Rutherford was clinging to life after she was struck by a pickup truck outside work, a township councilwoman reported.

Belina Ang, 56, was crossing Hackensack Street when she was struck by a 2008 Toyota Tacoma at 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, according to East Rutherford Police Capt. Jeff Yannacone.

The driver, a 33-year-old Carlstadt man, had begun heading north on Hackensack Street after making a left turn from Union Avenue when the truck hit Ang, the captain said.

She was breathing but unconscious with severe head injuries, he said.

Ang was brought to Hackensack University Medical Center by a Holy Name Medical Center ambulance.

"At this time the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed," Yannacone said on Friday, Feb. 2.

Ang worked as a financial engineer for The Fed. Her son had just graduated Mahwah High School last year and is attending the U.S. Naval Academy, friends said.

Ang "was put on life support, but sadly, declared brain dead by the doctors," Mahwah Councilwoman Michelle Crowe-Paz wrote in a public Facebook post and in a GoFundMe campaign that she organized for Ang's family.

Ang's husband, Takis, and their children Daphne and George, "made the decision to donate some of her organs," the councilwoman added.

"Belina worked very hard in her position in IT Securities, and was a loving wife and mother," the councilwoman wrote. "[She] was a behind-the-scenes presence in the community, with Mahwah Youth Tennis when her children were younger, and, as her children grew, with Scouts BSA Mahwah Troop 258, and the Mahwah Marching Thunderbirds.

"Any time assistance was needed, Belina showed up and looked out for all of the students, as if they were her own children," Crowe-Paz added. "Belina often took vacation from work to help out at the Mahwah Marching Thunderbird Band Camp. She served food and water to keep the students nourished and hydrated as they practiced. 

"On particularly hot days, Belina was seen on the field hosing the kids down to keep them cool[.]"

"This was a sudden tragedy," the councilwoman wrote, "and the Kalkanis family will be faced with a mountain of tasks, new processes, and, unfortunately, unexpected bills."
